About us

The Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society Inc (DMMS) is a not-for-profit cultural organisation committed to preserving and promoting the literary legacy of Dorothea Mackellar, one of Australia’s most celebrated poets and the author of the iconic poem “My Country.” Based in Gunnedah, New South Wales, the Society fosters poetry, creative expression, education, and regional cultural identity throughout Australia.

Through the nationally recognised Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards, community initiatives, educational programs, and cultural partnerships, DMMS encourages participation in literature and the arts for all ages, with a focus on young Australians and regional communities. The organisation also enhances Gunnedah’s cultural and tourism profile by highlighting the lasting connection between Dorothea Mackellar’s work, the Australian landscape, and rural life.

DMMS collaborates with government, educational institutions, sponsors, volunteers, and community stakeholders. It is committed to delivering sustainable cultural outcomes and preserving Australia’s literary heritage for future generations.
